BRACHIAL PLEXUS INJURY

Brachial Plexus is a group of nerves that come from spinal cord in the neck and travel down the arm.These nerves control muscles of the shoulder,elbow,wrist,hand and provide feeling in the arms. Causes: The nerves can be damaged by stretching,pressure or cutting.Stretching occurs when head and neck or forced away from the shoulder such as during the motorcycle fall or car accident Signs and symptoms: • Weakness or numbness • Loss of sensation • Loss of movement • Pain Diagnosis: • Medical Examination – pattern by which nerves from brachial plexus control various muscles of arm and hand will aid in determination of site of injury • Nerving of eye pupils, drooping of eye lid , lack of ability for face to sweat is a sign is that injury is close to the spinal cord • A shooting nerve like pain when the doctor taps along the affected nerve • X-rays,CT scan and Eletro diagnostic studies Treatment: 1)Non surgical :Physical therapy 2)Surgical : • Surgical treatment • Nerve repair • Nerve Graft • Nerve transfer • Tendon and Muscle transfers Rehabilitation: • A positive mind set and support of family,friends and health care professionals are important for recovery • Occupational therapists teach patients how to use the unaffected arm to perform daily activities like eating and personal hygiene • Lastly,patients will require healthy coping skills in order to make adjustments in their life
