CERVICAL SPONDILITIS

Also known as Cervical or neck Arthritis is a common age related condition that affects the joins and disc in the neck.These changes are caused by the normal wear and tear of aging. Causes: • With age the discs of cervical spine gradually break down,lose fluid and becomes stiffer. It usually occurs in middle aged and elderly people older than 50 years as bones and ligments get thicker encroaching on the space of spinal canal. • Another factor might be smoking,Pressure injury or trauma to neck • Depression and anxiety Signs and symptoms: • Pain in the neck which spreads to the shoulders from ways of the skull • Sometimes pain spreads down the arm to the hand of fingers • Pain flares from time to time • Neck stiffness and headaches • Pins and needles sensation in any part of the arm or hand Diagnosis: • Physical examination by the doctor • X-ray – look for Osteophytes • MRI – look at nerve roots for Herniated discs • CT scan – To assess the bony structures of Cervical spine Treatment: • Medications • Steroid injections in the neck • Physical therapy • Surgery
