GUILIAN BARY SYNDROME

It is a rare condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves leading to muscle weakness and even paralyses. Causes: • Precise causes not known • About two third patients develop this after they have been sick with respiratoruy infection or diarrhea.this suggests that this disorder may be triggered by an improper immune response to previous illness. • The following infections have been associated 1)influenza virus 2)Cytomegalo virus 3)Epstein-Barr virus 4)Micro plasma 5)Pneumonia 6)HIV virus Signs and symptoms: • Tingling and prickly sensation in fingers and toes • Muscle weakness in legs that travel to the upper body and gets worse over time • Difficulty in walking steadily • Difficulty in moving your eyes or face,talking and chewing • Severe low back ache • Loss of bladder control Diagnosis: • Medical history and examination • Tests like spinal Tap • Electromyography and nerve conduction tests Treatment: • GB- Syndrome can be life threatening if paralyses affects diaphragm or chest muscles preventing proper breathing • Whole of the treatment is to lessen severity of symptoms and support body functions while nervous system recovers. This may be done by 1)Plasma Pheresis 2)IV Immuno globulins
