PARKINSONISM

It is a condition that causes a combination of the movement abnormalities seen in Parkinson’s disease such as Tremor, Slow movement, impaid speech and Muscle stiffness Not everyone who has parkinsonism has parkinson’s Disease. There are many other causes of Parkinsonism including: • Medications, such as those use to treat psychosis, Psychitric disorders and nausea • Repeated Head trauma such as in boxing • Certain neurodegenerative disorders • Exposure to toxins like cyanide and carbon mono-oxide • Certain Brain Leisions such as tumours • Metabolic and other disorders such as chronic, liver failure and hypoparathyroidism Symptoms: • Decrease in facial expressions • Difficulties starting and controlling movements • Loss or weakness of movement • Soft voice • Stiffness of the trunk, arms or legs • Tremor Diagnosis: The Doctor will perform physical exam. This may show tremors, slow, shuffling walk, tense muscles, problems with posture and difficulty in starting or stopping voluntary movements. Reflexes usually are normal Treatment: If the condition is caused by medicine it is stopped or changed. Then medicines are given to treat the disease but they have severe side effects Complications: • Difficulty in doing daily activities • Difficulty in eating • Diasability • Injuries from falls
