PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME

This is a condition in which the Piriformis muscle located in the buttock region Spasms and causes the buttock pain. It also irritates the Sciatic nerve and causes pain numbness and tingling along the back of the leg and the foot. Causes: • It is caused by trauma to the buttocks • Caused by Muscle spasms resulting in nerve compression • Micro trauma may result from over use of the Piriformis muscle such as in long distance walking or running Symptoms: • A dull ache in buttock • Pain down the back of the thigh, calf and foot • Pain when walking up the stairs • Increased pain after prolonged sitting Diagnosis: This is based on the patient’s medical history, physical examination and diagnostic tests like X-rays, MRI and Nerve conduction Tests Treatment: • Medications, Muscle Relaxants, corticosteroid • Iontophoresis, injection with botulinum toxin • Physical therapy
