ROTATORY CUFF INJURY

Rotator cuff is the group of four muscles and tendons that’s surround the shoulder joint. Above this there is a sack of tissue called bursa that covers and protects the rotator cuff as it comes in contact with bones around the shoulder. when the rotator cuff is injured it leads to inflammation of the bursa called bursitis which causes pain and loss of motion. Causes: • Accident • Aging • Deterioration of the cuff Symptoms: • Pain • Weakness • Restricted motion • Catching • Locking • Feeling of instability The symptoms are worse in certain positions such as reaching backward to fasten a seat belt or pick up a brief case out of the back seat. Symptoms are also worse when the arm is elevated over head. Diagnosis: • History and physical examination: this is the best way to initially evaluate. It is important for the doctors to identify the pain that may be coming from places such as the neck or the heart. • X-rays • MRI • Arthroscopy Treatment: • Alteration in activities: Learning to use the shoulder in a safer more comfortable manner is important • Physical Therapy • Medications and injections
